Work in progress – June 2018

Update 18.06.18

The work of restoring the ring channel collector managed by COBALB continues. Restoration of the mechanical-hydraulic liftingstations has finished, with the exception of stations SS9 and SS20. Station 9, is one of the most important, where for some years part of the sewage (and recently the entire flow) collected upstream from the municipalities of Gradoli, Grotte di Castro, San Lorenzo Nuovo and Bolsena has been flowing into the lake. Special pumps are planned for this station which have been ordered but not yet delivered.

The same problem exists for Station 20, located on the river Marta, which (and with it the municipalities of Tuscania and Tarquinia) must accommodate all the untreated sewage of the lake district. This situation will continue until the purifier, currently completely out of service, is restored.

At all stations, the installation of new electrical panels and the adjustment of the electrical system has begun, with excavations, arrangement of cable ducts, wells and various electrical connections.

Only after the completion of these works will the collector with all its pumping stations be fully operational and, only at this point, the spills from the sewage collector into the lake should cease: an important first step towards reducing the nutrient load for the lake and towards an improvement in its overall state of health.

Remember that the official assessment of ARPA Lazio of the state of the lake as “sufficient” is still valid. This assessment refers to the ecological and chemical health of the whole body of water, to be distinguished from the quality of bathing water, recently defined as “excellent”. We underline (see the “eutrophication” page) that further and diverse measures will be needed to reverse the slow and constant deterioration and to bring the lake back to a “good” state of health.
