As it has every year since 2006, the “Goletta dei laghi” has monitored sewage pollution in several Italian lakes, while the “Goletta Verde” has analysed pollution of marine waters (see here for results of the 2022 campaign).

In Lake Bolsena volunteers from Legambiente found microbiological pollution above the legal limit in 2 of the 7 points tested (see the table here). Those two points are “Le Naiadi” at the mouth of the Guadetto ditch in the municipality of Bolsena, and in San Lorenzo municipality at the mouth of the Ponticello ditch (see here for the press conference).

In 2021, 4 out of 7 points were polluted, so there has been an overall improvement in the quality of bathing water, thanks in a large part to repairs carried out on the sewerage system by Talete, funded by the Lazio region.

A critical point of recent years at Montefiascone (at the mouth of the ditch coming from the Perlata valley) has been resolved thanks to a tip from citizens of illegal discharge coming from a tourist facility upstream and prompt response from the municipality. The recent drought conditions may also have contributed to improvements, leaving some ditches “dry”. But what is certain is that, according to many tourists, the waters of the lake are cleaner than they have been in the past.
