The Municipalities of the Lake Bolsena district oppose attempts to industrialise the territory and are organising initiatives to raise and to inform the population about the environmental risks caused by the geothermal plant of Castel Giorgio and by the worrying proliferation of hazelnut plantations in the lake basin.
Some mayors (those of Bolsena, Grotte di Castro and Montefiascone) have already issued restrictive ordinances against the indiscriminate use of pesticides and herbicides, recalling the obligation provided for by law (VINCA: environmental impact assessment) to evaluate any crop that could damage the aquifer of the Bolsena site classified by Europe Natura 2000. Other mayors encourage the population to think of strategies to be adopted to safeguard the biodiversity of our territory.
On these two hot topics, there will be a first meeting on September 13 at 6:00pm in the Municipal Hall of Gradoli, promoted by Mayor Attilio Mancini. The speakers will illustrate the critical points of the lake basin, dwelling on the impact that geothermal energy and intensive crops could have on its fragile ecosystem, as well as on the dangers that an uncontrolled use of pesticides and herbicides has on human health.
The following day, September 14 at 5:00pm, Mayor Antonio de Rossi will open a hearing at the Cascina di Capodimonte in which the public will be asked to make a constructive contribution of ideas on the issues addressed by the speakers: opposition to speculative geothermal energy; promotion of organic agriculture; discussion of monocultures; protection and enhancement of the archaeological heritage at risk of extinction.
The Municipalities of Montefiascone (after September 20) and Bolsena (at the beginning of October) are organising similar meetings, which we will soon report on.
On October 12th in Castel Giorgio there will be a demonstration with information on the geothermal plant and screening of films on the subject, as well as music and dinner. Details will soon be announced.
During all these initiatives, funds will be collected to support expenses for the appeal to TAR (Regional Administrative Court) against the Government’s decision to authorize the geothermal plant at Castel Giorgio. Contributions may be made in cash at the conclusion of individual events, or by transfer to the account set up at Banca TEMA, Bolsena by the associations and committees of Lake Bolsena, Alfina, and the Orvieto region.
