Work in progress – December 2018

According to the latest updates received from COBALB management, the restoration work on the pumping stations of the sewage canal is nearing completion:

  • all generators at the stations have been made operational
  • installation of the new electrical panels is finished, with the exception of station 19
  • all stations finally have the projected number of pumps.

At the beginning of December, there was still one pump missing at SS13, and two at SS15. And, due to the failure of the only pump left at station 15, there was a spillage of sewage that involved all stations upstream as far as SS9.

Another small incident, quickly resolved, happened a few days ago, when the transformer at SS13 suffered a breakdown.

The remote control and remote alarm system has not yet been installed.

Unfortunately, our repeated requests to the Region to be informed of the progress of work continue to be ignored. Therefore, we are currently not aware of the date of commencement of work on the wastewater treatment plant. The delay seems to depend on finding further funds to supplement those already provided. In fact, the sum originally allocated would have been inadequate to cope with the degradation of the plant.

A first stage of restoration is about to end, therefore, and it is a matter of satisfaction and relief. But we should mention, once again, that the works carried out so far are insufficient to protect the lake from wastewater pollution.

To this end there are things still to be completed:

  • the planned repair of some sections of piping
  • checking the tightness of all the manifold pipes
  • the correct disposal of waste water on the western side of the lake
  • the correct disposal of waste water from houses and facilities scattered around the lake
  • a solution for future maintenance of the collector
  • a solution for the future legal-administrative management of the entire system.

With regard to the last point, the Region has further postponed the move towards sustainable management of the water resource, withdrawing the threat of place in receivership those municipalities which refuse to join Talete.
